Chapter 9 ~ The Acceptance of the Atonement

VII. The Two Evaluations

God’s Will is your salvation. Would He not have given you the means to find it? If He wills you to have it, He must have made it possible and easy to obtain it. Your brothers are everywhere. You do not have to seek far for salvation. Every minute and every second gives you a chance to save yourself. Do not lose these chances, not because they will not return, but because delay of joy is needless. God wills you perfect happiness now. Is it possible that this is not also your will? And is it possible that this is not also the will of your brothers?

Consider, then, that in this joint will you are all united, and in this only. There may be disagreement on anything else, but not on this. This, then, is where peace abides. And you abide in peace when you so decide. Yet you cannot abide in peace unless you accept the Atonement, because the Atonement is the way to peace. The reason is very simple, and so obvious that it is often overlooked. The ego is afraid of the obvious, since obviousness is the essential characteristic of reality. Yet you cannot overlook it unless you are not looking.

It is perfectly obvious that if the Holy Spirit looks with love on all He perceives, He looks with love on you. His evaluation of you is based on His knowledge of what you are, and so He evaluates you truly. And this evaluation must be in your mind, because He is. The ego is also in your mind, because you have accepted it there. Its evaluation of you, however, is the exact opposite of the Holy Spirit’s, because the ego does not love you. It is unaware of what you are, and wholly mistrustful of everything it perceives because its perceptions are so shifting. The ego is therefore capable of suspiciousness at best and viciousness at worst. That is its range. It cannot exceed it because of its uncertainty. And it can never go beyond it because it can never be certain.

You, then, have two conflicting evaluations of yourself in your mind, and they cannot both be true. You do not yet realise how completely different these evaluations are, because you do not understand how lofty the Holy Spirit’s perception of you really is. He is not deceived by anything you do, because He never forgets what you are. The ego is deceived by everything you do, especially when you respond to the Holy Spirit, because at such times its confusion increases. The ego is, therefore, particularly likely to attack you when you react lovingly, because it has evaluated you as unloving and you are going against its judgement. The ego will attack your motives as soon as they become clearly out of accord with its perception of you. This is when it will shift abruptly from suspiciousness to viciousness, since its uncertainty is increased. Yet it is surely pointless to attack in return. What can this mean except that you are agreeing with the ego’s evaluation of what you are?

If you choose to see yourself as unloving you will not be happy. You are condemning yourself and must therefore regard yourself as inadequate. Would you look to the ego to help you escape from a sense of inadequacy it has produced, and must maintain for its existence? Can you escape from its evaluation of you by using its methods for keeping this picture intact?

You cannot evaluate an insane belief system from within it. Its range precludes this. You can only go beyond it, look back from a point where sanity exists and see the contrast. Only by this contrast can insanity be judged as insane. With the grandeur of God in you, you have chosen to be little and to lament your littleness. Within the system that dictated this choice the lament is inevitable. Your littleness is taken for granted there and you do not ask, ‘Who granted it?’ The question is meaningless within the ego’s thought system, because it would open the whole thought system to question.

I have said that the ego does not know what a real question is. Lack of knowledge of any kind is always associated with unwillingness to know, and this produces a total lack of knowledge simply because knowledge is total. Not to question your littleness therefore is to deny all knowledge, and keep the ego’s whole thought system intact. You cannot retain part of a thought system, because it can be questioned only at its foundation. And this must be questioned from beyond it, because within it its foundation does stand. The Holy Spirit judges against the reality of the ego’s thought system merely because He knows its foundation is not true. Therefore, nothing that arises from it means anything. He judges every belief you hold in terms of where it comes from. If it comes from God, He knows it to be true. If it does not, He knows that it is meaningless.

Whenever you question your value, say:

God Himself is incomplete without me.

Remember this when the ego speaks, and you will not hear it. The truth about you is so lofty that nothing unworthy of God is worthy of you. Choose, then, what you want in these terms, and accept nothing that you would not offer to God as wholly fitting for Him. You do not want anything else. Return your part to Him, and He will give you all of Himself in exchange for the return of what belongs to Him and renders Him complete.

ACIM Workbook Lesson for March 20

Lesson 78

Let miracles replace all grievances.

1. Perhaps it is not yet quite clear to you that each decision that you make is one between a grievance and a miracle. Each grievance stands like a dark shield of hate before the miracle it would conceal. And as you raise it up before your eyes, you will not see the miracle beyond. Yet all the while it waits for you in light, but you behold your grievances instead.

2. Today we go beyond the grievances, to look upon the miracle instead. We will reverse the way you see by not allowing sight to stop before it sees. We will not wait before the shield of hate, but lay it down and gently lift our eyes in silence to behold the Son of God.

3. He waits for you behind your grievances, and as you lay them down he will appear in shining light where each one stood before. For every grievance is a block to sight, and as it lifts you see the Son of God where he has always been. He stands in light, but you were in the dark. Each grievance made the darkness deeper, and you could not see.

4. Today we will attempt to see God’s Son. We will not let ourselves be blind to him; we will not look upon our grievances. So is the seeing of the world reversed, as we look out toward truth, away from fear. We will select one person you have used as target for your grievances, and lay the grievances aside and look at him. Someone, perhaps, you fear and even hate; someone you think you love who angered you; someone you call a friend, but whom you see as difficult at times or hard to please, demanding, irritating or untrue to the ideal he should accept as his, according to the role you set for him.

5. You know the one to choose; his name has crossed your mind already. He will be the one of whom we ask God’s Son be shown to you. Through seeing him behind the grievances that you have held against him, you will learn that what lay hidden while you saw him not is there in everyone, and can be seen. He who was enemy is more than friend when he is freed to take the holy role the Holy Spirit has assigned to him. Let him be savior unto you today. Such is his role in God your Father’s plan.

6. Our longer practice periods today will see him in this role. You will attempt to hold him in your mind, first as you now consider him. You will review his faults, the difficulties you have had with him, the pain he caused you, his neglect, and all the little and the larger hurts he gave. You will regard his body with its flaws and better points as well, and you will think of his mistakes and even of his “sins.”

7. Then let us ask of Him Who knows this Son of God in his reality and truth, that we may look on him a different way, and see our savior shining in the light of true forgiveness, given unto us. We ask Him in the holy Name of God and of His Son, as holy as Himself:

Let me behold my savior in this one You have appointed as the one for me to ask to lead me to the holy light in which he stands, that I may join with him.

The body’s eyes are closed, and as you think of him who grieved you, let your mind be shown the light in him beyond your grievances.

8. What you have asked for cannot be denied. Your savior has been waiting long for this. He would be free, and make his freedom yours. The Holy Spirit leans from him to you, seeing no separation in God’s Son. And what you see through Him will free you both. Be very quiet now, and look upon your shining savior. No dark grievances obscure the sight of him. You have allowed the Holy Spirit to express through him the role God gave Him that you might be saved.

9. God thanks you for these quiet times today in which you laid your images aside, and looked upon the miracle of love the Holy Spirit showed you in their place. The world and Heaven join in thanking you, for not one Thought of God but must rejoice as you are saved, and all the world with you.

10. We will remember this throughout the day, and take the role assigned to us as part of God’s salvation plan, and not our own. Temptation falls away when we allow each one we meet to save us, and refuse to hide his light behind our grievances. To everyone you meet, and to the ones you think of or remember from the past, allow the role of savior to be given, that you may share it with him. For you both, and all the sightless ones as well, we pray:

Let miracles replace all grievances.

ACIM Q & A for Today

 Q) Does being defenseless mean I should let someone kill or rape me, or stand by while violence is committed against loved ones or others?

A) We begin by stating that defenselessness is a thought of the right mind, an attitude based upon the Holy Spirit’s thought system that the Son of God is innocent and sinless, and therefore invulnerable. If there is no sin there can be no guilt. And without guilt there can be no projection, which means there can be no fear of being attacked. Guilt, as the Course teaches, demands punishment: if no guilt exists, fear of punishment is also non-existent. Finally, without fear of Punishment from without, there is no need for defenses within, and so the true state of defenselessness is the thought of innocence and invulnerability.

This does not then mean that a right-minded person’s behavior is necessarily what the world thinks of as defenseless. The meaning of spiritual defenselessness is often distorted, so that people think they must be totally passive, like doormats, to be defenseless. To let others do violence to oneself, a loved one, or anyone else, very often is allowing those persons to act in a manner that would not only be harmful to their “victims,” but to themselves as well by reinforcing their own guilt over their separation from God and from the rest of the Sonship. Acting behaviorally to “protect” oneself can actually then be following the Holy Spirit’s guidance in the mind to be loving. It is not the form of the behavior that reflects defenselessness, but the content of the mind’s thought.

Both our professional experiences offered examples of this principle. My (Kenneth’s) first employment as a psychologist was working with disturbed children in a special school. These were children ranging from ages five to thirteen, many of whom had severe behavioral problems which often manifested in their acting violently towards themselves and others. I devised a way that I could control their behavior by getting them to the floor, wrapping my legs and arms around them in such manner that they were not hurt, but were unable to kick, punch, bite, scratch, or harm anyone. Thus by preventing their attempts at behavioral violence, I was able eventually to calm them down. My behavior could have looked to an observer as defensive, although obviously its purpose was only to help.

During my tenure as teacher and dean in a New York City high school, I (Gloria) many times had to have teens suspended from school or arrested for various kinds of violent behavior and use of weapons. My intervention, too, could have been interpreted by an observer as defensive. Yet, checking out my responses as best I could with Jesus as to how I should proceed, resulted in — paraphrasing from the text — setting a limit on the teenagers’ ability to miscreate (T-2.III.3:3). Thus they were prevented from acting out more murderous thoughts which would have resulted in a greater reinforcement of their guilt. I always felt it was my responsibility as dean, which was a dream role I scripted, to get myself out of the way to the best of my ability so that I could access the correction script of the Holy Spirit in these difficult circumstances. I had the little willingness A Course in Miraclesspeaks about, but I sometimes wondered in my early days with the Course, why I scripted such seemingly difficult situations!

For us to have acted otherwise — i.e., to have been behaviorally passive or “defenseless” in the face of such aggressive actions — would have been as unloving as it would be to let a rapist brutally assault your wife or daughter while you are standing by mouthing Course “platitudes” about not being a body, how love does not defend itself, etc. As with everything related to the teachings of A Course in Miracles, it is the content or purpose that supplies the meaning to our actions, and the only true meaning comes from Jesus or the Holy Spirit in our minds. Their love is abstract and non-specific, and always the same. Yet this love is expressed through the specific expressions of our individuality, and therefore differs from one person to the next. Thus, only one with the wisdom of Jesus would be in a position to justly and fairly evaluate another’s actions. For anyone else it would be foolhardy and arrogant to make such judgments. As he instructs us in the manual for teachers:

In order to judge anything rightly, one would have to be fully aware of an inconceivably wide range of things; past, present and to come…. And one would have to be certain there is no distortion in his perception, so that his judgment would be wholly fair to everyone on whom it rests now and in the future. Who is in a position to do this? Who except in grandiose fantasies would claim this for himself… Make then but one more judgment. It is this: There is Someone with you Whose judgment  is perfect (M-10.3:3,5-7; 4:6-7).

And so the bottom line is always to ask Jesus or the Holy Spirit for help before we respond to a difficult situation, as well as to ask Their help before attempting to judge another’s response in a difficult situation.

Chapter 6 ~ The Lessons of Love

IX. Be Vigilant Only for God and His Kingdom

We said before that the Holy Spirit is evaluative, and must be. He sorts out the true from the false in your mind, and teaches you to judge every thought you allow to enter it in the light of what God put there. Whatever is in accord with this light He retains, to strengthen the Kingdom in you. What is partly in accord with it He accepts and purifies. But what is out of accord entirely He rejects by judging against. This is how He keeps the Kingdom perfectly consistent and perfectly unified. Remember, however, that what the Holy Spirit rejects the ego accepts. This is because they are in fundamental disagreement about everything, being in fundamental disagreement about what you are. The ego’s beliefs on this crucial issue vary, and that is why it promotes different moods. The Holy Spirit never varies on this point, and so the one mood He engenders is joy. He protects it by rejecting everything that does not foster joy, and so He alone can keep you wholly joyous.

The Holy Spirit does not teach you to judge others, because He does not want you to teach error and learn it yourself. He would hardly be consistent if He allowed you to strengthen what you must learn to avoid. In the mind of the thinker, then, He is judgmental, but only in order to unify the mind so it can perceive without judgment. This enables the mind to teach without judgment, and therefore to learn to be without judgment. The undoing is necessary only in your mind, so that you will not project, instead of extend. God Himself has established what you can extend with perfect safety. Therefore, the Holy Spirit’s third lesson is:

“Be vigilant only for God and His Kingdom.”

This is a major step toward fundamental change. Yet it still has an aspect of thought reversal, since it implies that there is something you must be vigilant against. It has advanced far from the first lesson, which is merely the beginning of the thought reversal, and also from the second, which is essentially the identification of what is more desirable. This step, which follows from the second as the second follows from the first, emphasizes the dichotomy between the desirable and the undesirable. It therefore makes the ultimate choice inevitable.

While the first step seems to increase conflict and the second may still entail conflict to some extent, this step calls for consistent vigilance against it. I have already told you that you can be as vigilant against the ego as for it. This lesson teaches not only that you can be, but that you must be. It does not concern itself with order of difficulty, but with clear-cut priority for vigilance. This lesson is unequivocal in that it teaches there must be no exceptions, although it does not deny that the temptation to make exceptions will occur. Here, then, your consistency is called on despite chaos. Yet chaos and consistency cannot coexist for long, since they are mutually exclusive. As long as you must be vigilant against anything, however, you are not recognizing this mutual exclusiveness, and still believe that you can choose either one. By teaching what to choose, the Holy Spirit will ultimately teach you that you need not choose at all. This will finally liberate your mind from choice, and direct it towards creation within the Kingdom.

Choosing through the Holy Spirit will lead you to the Kingdom. You create by your true being, but what you are you must learn to remember. The way to remember it is inherent in the third step, which brings together the lessons implied in the others, and goes beyond them towards real integration. If you allow yourself to have in your mind only what God put there, you are acknowledging your mind as God created it. Therefore, you are accepting it as it is. Since it is whole, you are teaching peace because you believe in it. The final step will still be taken for you by God, but by the third step the Holy Spirit has prepared you for God. He is getting you ready for the translation of having into being by the very nature of the steps you must take with Him.

You learn first that having rests on giving, and not on getting. Next you learn that you learn what you teach, and that you want to learn peace. This is the condition for identifying with the Kingdom, since it is the condition of the Kingdom. You have believed that you are without the Kingdom, and have therefore excluded yourself from it in your belief. It is therefore essential to teach you that you must be included, and that the belief that you are not is the only thing that you must exclude.

The third step is thus one of protection for your mind, allowing you to identify only with the center, where God placed the altar to Himself. Altars are beliefs, but God and His creations are beyond belief because they are beyond question. The Voice for God speaks only for belief beyond question, which is the preparation for being without question. As long as belief in God and His Kingdom is assailed by any doubts in your mind, His perfect accomplishment is not apparent to you. This is why you must be vigilant on God’s behalf. The ego speaks against His creation, and therefore engenders doubt. You cannot go beyond belief until you believe fully.

To teach the whole Sonship without exception demonstrates that you perceive its wholeness, and have learned that it is one. Now you must be vigilant to hold its oneness in your mind because, if you let doubt enter, you will lose awareness of its wholeness and will be unable to teach it. The wholeness of the Kingdom does not depend on your perception, but your awareness of its wholeness does. It is only your awareness that needs protection, since being cannot be assailed. Yet a real sense of being cannot be yours while you are doubtful of what you are. This is why vigilance is essential. Doubts about being must not enter your mind, or you cannot know what you are with certainty. Certainty is of God for you. Vigilance is not necessary for truth, but it is necessary against illusions.

Truth is without illusions and therefore within the Kingdom. Everything outside the Kingdom is illusion. When you threw truth away you saw yourself as if you were without it. By making another kingdom that you valued, you did not keep only the Kingdom of God in your mind, and thus placed part of your mind outside it. What you made has imprisoned your will, and given you a sick mind that must be healed. Your vigilance against this sickness is the way to heal it. Once your mind is healed it radiates health, and thereby teaches healing. This establishes you as a teacher who teaches like me. Vigilance was required of me as much as of you, and those who choose to teach the same thing must be in agreement about what they believe.

The third step, then, is a statement of what you want to believe, and entails a willingness to relinquish everything else. The Holy Spirit will enable you to take this step, if you follow Him. Your vigilance is the sign that you want Him to guide you. Vigilance does require effort, but only until you learn that effort itself is unnecessary. You have exerted great effort to preserve what you made because it was not true. Therefore, you must now turn your effort against it. Only this can cancel out the need for effort, and call upon the being which you both have and are. This recognition is wholly without effort since it is already true and needs no protection. It is in the perfect safety of God. Therefore, inclusion is total and creation is without limit.

ACIM Workbook Lesson for February 23

Lesson 53

Today we will review the following:

(11) My meaningless thoughts are showing me a meaningless world.

Since the thoughts of which I am aware do not mean anything, the world that pictures them can have no meaning. What is producing this world is insane, and so is what it produces. Reality is not insane, and I have real thoughts as well as insane ones. I can therefore see a real world, if I look to my real thoughts as my guide for seeing.

(12) I am upset because I see a meaningless world.

Insane thoughts are upsetting. They produce a world in which there is no order anywhere. Only chaos rules a world that represents chaotic thinking, and chaos has no laws. I cannot live in peace in such a world. I am grateful that this world is not real, and that I need not see it at all unless I choose to value it. And I do not choose to value what is totally insane and has no meaning.

(13) A meaningless world engenders fear.

The totally insane engenders fear because it is completely undependable, and offers no grounds for trust. Nothing in madness is dependable. It holds out no safety and no hope. But such a world is not real. I have given it the illusion of reality, and have suffered from my belief in it. Now I choose to withdraw this belief, and place my trust in reality. In choosing this, I will escape all the effects of the world of fear, because I am acknowledging that it does not exist.

(14) God did not create a meaningless world.

How can a meaningless world exist if God did not create it? He is the Source of all meaning, and everything that is real is in His Mind. It is in my mind too, because He created it with me. Why should I continue to suffer from the effects of my own insane thoughts, when the perfection of creation is my home? Let me remember the power of my decision, and recognize where I really abide.

(15) My thoughts are images that I have made.

Whatever I see reflects my thoughts. It is my thoughts that tell me where I am and what I am. The fact that I see a world in which there is suffering and loss and death shows me that I am seeing only the representation of my insane thoughts, and am not allowing my real thoughts to cast their beneficent light on what I see. Yet God’s way is sure. The images I have made cannot prevail against Him because it is not my will that they do so. My will is His, and I will place no other gods before Him.

ACIM Q & A for Today

Q #500: Am I in your dream or are you in mine?

A: Both and neither. I am in your dream if you react to me in any way, and you are in my dream if I react to you in any way. Strictly speaking — remembering we are talking about an illusory process — there is only one dreamer dreaming a dream of separation from God that involves denying responsibility for that choice to have a special, individual life of its own, which has become equated with sinfulness deserving of punishment. The means of carrying out this objective of keeping individuality while avoiding responsibility for it is to have a multitude of individuals in some form of victim-victimizer relationship. The internal sense of sinfulness can then be projected onto someone else who then is perceived as the guilty sinner. So if you and I are in a relationship, it is because a larger self has split off into this relationship between two people to conceal what is really going on in its mind.

Q #501: How can one perceive forgiveness correctly, in Jesus’ eyes, after suffering years of verbal and physical abuse?

A: First, true forgiveness never involves denying that something terrible happened. It focuses entirely on your thoughts and which teacher you choose to help you: the ego or Jesus. To the ego, your situation can be seen only through the eyes of separation: an innocent victim and a sinful victimizer. And the ego may support forgiveness, but it would still be in the context of an innocent victim forgiving a sinful victimizer. This is the common approach of the world and most religions of the world — that sin actually takes place but is forgiven. Jesus calls this false forgiveness or “forgiveness-to-destroy,” for despite the appearance of piety, it supports the thought system of separation, and therefore can never lead to lasting, true peace.

Forgiveness seen through Jesus’ eyes is marked by an absence of judgment or condemnation. Again, it does not deny attack or pain; and it does not mean that criminal prosecution cannot be pursued. The basis of this approach is our learning that the peace of God is in our minds because we are His Child. Because it is God’s peace, nothing whatsoever has power to take it away. We can choose to turn away from it, but we cannot destroy it. Nothing can. Therefore to blame someone or something else for our lack of peace is to engage in a form of self-deception. Casting blame denies the truth about the peace in our minds. The other dimension of this is that in our wrong minds we always carry the unbearable burden of guilt over our choice to separate ourselves from God. The pain of this guilt, as well as the expectation of extreme punishment for our sin, causes us to deny it in ourselves and project it onto someone outside us, who would then be seen as deserving of condemnation. Therefore, in our wrong minds we would use situations in the world for this purpose of getting rid of our guilt. Jesus teaches us that that strategy does not work, for the guilt just stays in our minds and is reinforced by the deception. (T.13.II.1:1,2; X.3:1,3,5,7)

Jesus would have us turn to him when we feel we have been victimized so that he could help us use the very same situation to unlearn what the ego taught us. Without denying the objective events that took place, Jesus would help us recognize our projection and then withdraw it, so that we can see the original mistake we made, which is judging ourselves guilty of having destroying love. He would help us realize the impossibility of that; and if we could accept it, we would be free of guilt and consequently be at peace, recognizing at the same time that that is the truth about everyone. In that state of mind, there is no way we could ever condemn ourselves or anyone else, regardless of what has been done behaviorally. The facts are still facts. But our reaction or interpretation would have changed completely. That is why Jesus explains that in true forgiveness we forgive what was not done to us.

From this place of love and peace in our minds, we would then do and say what is most loving for all concerned. What that would look like in any given situation cannot be determined ahead of time. It could mean having no further contact with the attacker, pursuing prosecution, talking with the person, going to therapy with the person, or any number of other things. But the perspective would no longer be that of victim and victimizer. Through the gentle eyes of Jesus, we would see that an attacker is a Son of God, too, and shares the same wrong and right mind and the ability to choose between them that we do. He would help us see that concealed beneath all viciousness is tremendous fear and a call for love. It cannot be stressed too much, though, that this does not involve the denial of the objective facts of the attack, or the pain one is feeling.

Finally, Jesus would help us learn that when we judge others as deserving of condemnation, we are doing the same thing to ourselves. He is always teaching us that we are all really one, and so because of this oneness, we cannot condemn another person without at the same time condemning ourselves. “Forgive and be forgiven. As you give you receive” (W.pI.122.6:3,4). This undoes the ego’s main principle that it is always one or the other: my innocence is bought at your expense. But Jesus does not underestimate the difficulty of our accepting this, or its importance in achieving our goal of inner peace. He states that this idea, “completely alien to the ego and the thinking of the world, is crucial to the thought reversal that this course will bring about. If you believed this statement, there would be no problem in complete forgiveness, certainty of goal, and sure direction. You would understand the means by which salvation comes to you, and would not hesitate to use it now” (W.pI.126.1).

Surely, comprehending A Course in Miracles metaphysics of non-dualism is necessary in order to relate to these ideas fully and avoid misinterpretations; so further study may be helpful. 100 GREAT COURSE QUOTES

Course Introduction

“This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.

This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:

Nothing real can be threatened.

Nothing unreal exists.

Herein lies the peace of God.”

Only in that does it remain wholly consistent because only that can be consistent.”

A Course in Mind Training

“This is a course in mind training. All learning involves attention and study at some level. Some of the later parts of the course rest too heavily on these earlier sections not to require their careful study. You will also need them for preparation. Without this, you may become much too fearful of what is to come to make constructive use of it…Some of the later steps in this course…involve a more direct approach to God Himself. It would be unwise to start on these steps without careful preparation, or awe will be confused with fear, and the experience will be more traumatic than beatific… ”

(T-1.VII.4:1ff)

   Know Thyself

“The goal of the curriculum, regardless of the teacher you choose, is know thyself. There is nothing else to learn. Everyone is looking for himself, and for the power and glory he thinks he has lost. Whenever you are with anyone, you have another opportunity to find them. Your power and glory are in him because they are yours. The ego tries to find them in yourself because it does not know where to look. The Holy Spirit teaches you that, if you look only at yourself, you cannot find yourself because that is not what you are.”

(The Holy Encounter)

Ideas Leave Not Their Source

“You think that death is of the body. Yet it is but an idea, irrelevant to what is seen as physical. A thought is in the mind. It can be then applied as mind directs it. But its origin is where it must be changed, if change occurs. Ideas leave not their source. The emphasis this course has placed on that idea is due to its centrality in our attempts to change your mind about yourself. It is the reason you can heal. It is the cause of healing. It is why you cannot die. Its truth established you as one with God.”

Death is the thought that you are separate from your Creator. It is the belief conditions change, emotions alternate because of causes you cannot control, you did not make, and you can never change. It is the fixed belief ideas can leave their source, and take on qualities the source does not contain, becoming different from their own origin, apart from it in kind as well as distance, time and form.

Death cannot come from life. Ideas remain united to their source. They can extend all that their source contains. In that, they can go far beyond themselves. But they can not give birth to what was never given them. As they are made, so will their making be. As they were born, so will they then give birth. And where they come from, there will they return….

I walk with God in perfect holiness.

Today’s idea but states the simple truth that makes the thought of sin impossible. It promises there is no cause for guilt, and being causeless it does not exist. It follows surely from the basic thought so often mentioned in the text; ideas leave not their source. If this be true, how can you be apart from God? How could you walk the world alone and separate from your Source? (From Workbook Lessons 167 & 156)

A Universal Experience, Not a Universal Theology

“A universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary.

It is this experience toward which the course is directed” (C.in.2:5,6)

***

Removing the Barriers to Love

“This course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance.”

***

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all of the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. It is not necessary to seek for what is true, but it is necessary to seek for what is false.” (T-16.IV.6:1-2).

There Is No World

“There is no world!

This is the central thought the Course attempts to teach.”

(Lesson 132, p.6)

***

No Compromise

“This course is easy just because it makes no compromise.

Yet it seems difficult to those who still believe that compromise is possible.”

(Text, Chapter 23)

***

God’s Son is Guiltless

“Its central theme is always, ‘God’s Son is guiltless, and in his innocence is his salvation.’ It can be taught by actions or thoughts; in words or soundlessly; in any language or in no language; in any place or time or manner.”

(M.1.3:4,5,6)

Forgiveness/Overlooking Error

“This is not a course in philosophical speculation, nor is it concerned with precise terminology. It is concerned only with Atonement, or the correction of perception. The means of the Atonement is forgiveness. The structure of “individual consciousness” is essentially irrelevant because it is a concept representing the “original error” or the “original sin.” To study the error itself does not lead to correction, if you are indeed to succeed in overlooking the error. And it is just this process of overlooking at which the course aims.”

(Introduction to “Clarification of Terms,” Paragraph 1)

***

What You Use Body For, It will Become for You

“The central lesson is always this; that what you use the body for it will become to you. Use if for sin or for attack, which is the same as sin, and you will see it as sinful. Because it is sinful it is weak, and being weak, it suffers and it dies. Use it to bring the Word of God to those who have it not, and the body becomes holy. Because it is holy it cannot be sick, nor can it die. When its usefulness is done it is laid by, and that is all…” (Manual, Section 12, 5)

Miracles

“There is no order of difficulty in miracles.

One is not “harder” or “bigger” than another.

They are all the same.

All expressions of love are maximal.”

***
Miracles represent freedom from fear. “Atoning” means “undoing.”

The undoing of fear is an essential part of the Atonement value of miracles (T-1.I.26).

***

“Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love.

They are performed by those who temporarily have more for those who temporarily have less.”

Enlightenment

“Why wait for Heaven?

Those who seek the Light are merely covering their eyes.

The Light is in them now.

Enlightenment is but a recognition, not a change at all.”

God

“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”

***

“A sense of separation from God is the only lack you really need correct.”

“You are the work of God, and His work is wholly lovable and wholly loving.

This is how a man must think of himself in his heart, because this is what he is.”

In the workbook, Jesus opens the lesson about wanting the peace of God by stating,

“To say these words is nothing. But to mean these words is everything”

(W.pI.185.1:1,2).

***

“Remember that no one is where he is by accident, and chance plays no part in God’s plan.”

***

“God knows His children with perfect certainty.

He created them by knowing them.

He recognizes them perfectly.

When they do not recognize each other, they do not recognize Him.”

***

“Glory be to God in the highest and to you because He has so willed it.

Ask and it shall be give you because it has already been given.

Ask for light and learn that you are light.

If you want understanding and enlightenment,

you will learn it because your will to learn it is your decision to listen to the Teacher

who knows of light and can therefore teach it to you.

(8.IV.16.1-3)

***

“The journey to God is merely the reawakening of the knowledge of where you are always, and what you are forever. It is a journey without distance to a goal that has never changed. Truth can only be experienced. It cannot be described and it cannot be explained. I can make you aware of the conditions of truth, but the experience is of God. Together we can meet its conditions, but truth will dawn upon you of itself.”

LOVE

“The search for love is but the honest searching out of everything that interferes with love.”

EGO

The ego lives by comparisons. (p. 52)

The ego cannot survive without judgment. (p. 54)

The ego seeks to divide and separate. Spirit seeks to unify and heal. (p. 110)

***

“What is the ego?  But a dream of what you really are.  A thought you are apart from your Creator and a wish to be what He created not.  It is a thing of madness, not reality at all.  A name for namelessness is all it is.  A symbol of impossibility; a choice for options that do not exist. We name it but to help us understand that it is nothing but an ancient thought that what is made has immortality.  But what could come of this except a dream which, like all dreams, can only end in death?”

(Clarification of Terms, “The Ego – The Miracle”)

***

What is the ego?  Nothingness, but in a form that seems like something.  In a world of form the ego cannot be denied for it alone seems real.  Yet could God’s Son as He created him abide in form or in a world of form?  Who asks you to define the ego and explain how it arose can be but he who thinks it real, and seeks by definition to ensure that its illusive nature is concealed behind the words that seem to make it so.

There is no definition for a lie that serves to make it true.  Nor can there be a truth that lies conceal effectively.  The ego’s unreality is not denied by words nor is its meaning clear because its nature seems to have a form.  Who can define the undefinable?  And yet there is an answer even here.

We cannot really make a definition for what the ego is, but we can say what it is not.  And this is shown to us with perfect clarity.  It is from this that we deduce all that the ego is.  Look at its opposite and you can see the only answer that is meaningful.

The ego’s opposite in every way,–in origin, effect and consequence–we call a miracle.  And here we find all that is not the ego in this world.  Here is the ego’s opposite and here alone we look on what the ego was, for here we see all that it seemed to do, and cause and its effects must still be one.

Where there was darkness now we see the light.  What is the ego?  What the darkness was.  Where is the ego?  Where the darkness was.  What is it now and where can it be found?  Nothing and nowhere.  Now the light has come: Its opposite has gone without a trace.  Where evil was there now is holiness. What is the ego?  What the evil was.  Where is the ego?  In an evil dream that but seemed real while you were dreaming it.  Where there was crucifixion stands God’s Son.  What is the ego?  Who has need to ask?  Where is the ego?  Who has need to seek for an illusion now that dreams are gone?

Holy Spirit

“The Voice of the Holy Spirit does not command, because It is incapable of arrogance. It does not demand, because It does not seek control. It does not overcome, because It does not attack. It merely reminds. It is compelling only because of what It reminds you of. It brings to your mind the other way, remaining quiet even in the midst of the turmoil you may make” (T.5.II.7.1,2,3,4,5,6).

THE SON OF GOD/SONSHIP

“He makes no distinctions in what is Himself and what is still Himself. What He creates is not apart from Him, and nowhere does the Father end, the Son begin as something separate from Him” (W.pI.132.12:3,4; see also T.2.I.1:1; T.11.I.2,3,4,5,6,7; T.28.II.2:1,2). ***

“Forget not the Kingdom of God for anything the world has to offer.

The world can add nothing to the power and the glory of God and His holy Sons,

but it can blind the Sons to the Father if they behold it.

You cannot behold the world and know God.

Only one is true.”

***

“This is an insane world, and do not underestimate the extent of its insanity.”

What is Forgiveness?

“Forgiveness is the healing of the perception of separation.”

Text, Chapter 3

***

“Forgiveness is for God and toward God but not of Him. It is impossible to think of anything He created that could need forgiveness. Forgiveness, then, is an illusion, but because of its purpose, which is the Holy Spirit’s, it has one difference. Unlike all other illusions it lead away from error and not towards it.”

***

“You who want peace can only find it by complete forgiveness.”

(VI.1)

***

“You have no idea of the tremendous release and deep peace

that comes from meeting yourself and your brother totally without judgment.”

                     (Text, Chapter 3)

***

“To forgive is merely to remember only the loving thoughts you gave in the past, and those that were given you.”

***

“Forgiveness recognizes what you thought your brother did to you has not occurred. It does not pardon sins and make them real. It sees there was no sin. And in that view are all your sins forgiven. What is sin, except a false idea about God’s Son? Forgiveness merely sees its falsity, and therefore lets it go. What then is free to take its place is now the Will of God.

Forgiveness is still, and quietly does nothing. It offends no aspect of reality, nor seeks to twist it to appearances it likes. It merely looks, and waits, and judges not. He who would not forgive must judge, for he must justify his failure to forgive. But he who would forgive himself must learn to welcome truth exactly as it is.

Do nothing, then, and let forgiveness show you what to do, through Him Who is your Guide, your Savior and Protector, strong in hope, and certain of your ultimate success. He has forgiven you already, for such is His function, given Him by God. Now must you share His function, and forgive whom He has saved, whose sinlessness He sees, and whom He honors as the Son of God.”

Jesus

“The name of Jesus is the name of one who was a man but saw the face of Christ in all his brothers and remembered God.

So he became identified with Christ, a man no longer, but at one with God.”

“Few appreciate the real power of the mind, and no one remains fully aware of it all the time.

However, if you hope to spare yourself from fear there are some things you must realize, and realize fully.

The mind is very powerful, and never loses its creative force.

It never sleeps.

Every instant it is creating.

It is hard to recognize that thought and belief combine into a power surge that can literally move mountains.

It appears at first glance that to believe such power about yourself is arrogant,

but that is not the real reason you not believe it.

You prefer to believe that your thoughts cannot exert real influence because you are actually afraid of them…

There are no idle thoughts.

All thinking produces form at some level.”

Time

“Time is a trick, a sleight of hand, a vast illusion in which figures come and go as if by magic. Yet there is a plan behind appearances that does not change. The script is written. When experience will come to end your doubting has been set. For we but see the journey from the point at which it ended, looking back on it, imagining we make it once again; reviewing mentally what has gone by.”

“Infinite patience produces immediate results.”

Symbols

“It would indeed be strange if you were asked to go beyond all symbols of the world, forgetting them forever; yet were asked to take a teaching function. You have need to use the symbols of the world a while. But be you not deceived by them as well. They do not stand for anything at all, and in your practicing it is this thought that will release you from them. They become but means by which you can communicate in ways the world can understand, but which you recognize is not the unity where true communication can be found.”

***

Syllogisms

“Spirit is in a state of grace forever

Your reality is only spirit

Therefore you are in a state of grace forever.”

***

To whatever extent you are willing to submit your beliefs to this test, to that extent are your perceptions corrected. In sorting out the false from the true, the miracle proceeds along these lines: Perfect love casts out fear. If fear exists, Then there is not perfect love. But: Only perfect love exists. If there is fear, It produces a state that does not exist. Believe this and you will be free. Only God can establish this solution, and this faith is His gift.

***

Perfect love casts out fear.

If fear exists,

Then there is not perfect love.

But:

Only perfect love exists.

If there is fear,

It produces a state that does not exist.”

***

Teaching

“The value of the Atonement does not lie in the manner in which it is expressed. In fact, if it used truly, it will inevitably be expressed in whatever way is most helpful to the receiver. This means that a miracle, to attain its full efficacy, must be expressed in a language that the recipient can understand without fear. This does not necessarily mean that this is the highest level of communication of which he is capable. It does mean, however, that it is the highest level of communication of which he is capable now. The whole aim of the miracle is to raise the level of communication , not to lower it by increasing fear.” (T 2:5)

“Spirit need not be taught, but the ego must be. Learning is ultimately perceived as frightening because it leads to the relinquishment, not the destruction, of the ego to the light of spirit. This is the change the ego must fear, because it does not share my charity. My lesson was like yours, and because I learned it I can teach it. I will never attack your ego, but I am trying to teach you how its thought system arose. When I remind you of your true creation, your ego cannot but respond with fear.” (T 4:3)

“A teacher of God is anyone who chooses to be one. His qualifications consist solely in this; somehow, somewhere he has made a deliberate choice in which he did not see his interests as apart from someone else’s” (M.1.1:2).

I have purified them of the errors that hid their light, and kept them for you in their own perfect radiance. They are beyond destruction and beyond guilt.  The Better Way

“Tolerance for pain may be high, but it is not without limit.

Eventually everyone begins to recognize, however dimly, that there must be a better way.

As this recognition becomes more firmly established, it becomes a turning point.

This ultimately reawakens spiritual vision, simultaneously weakening the investment in physical sight.

The alternating investment in the two levels of perception is usually experienced as conflict, which can become very acute.

But the outcome is as certain as God.”

(2.III.3.5-10)

The Forgotten Song

“Listen-perhaps you catch a hint of an ancient state not quite forgotten; dim, perhaps, and yet not altogether unfamiliar, like a song whose name is long forgotten; and the circumstances in which you heard completely unremembered. Not the whole song has stayed with you, but just a little wisp of melody, attached not to a person or a place or anything particular. But you remember, from just this little part, how lovely was the song, how wonderful the setting where you heard it, and how you loved those who were there and listened with you.

“The notes are nothing. Yet you have kept them with you, not for themselves, but as a soft reminder of what would make you weep if you remembered how dear it was to you. You could remember, yet you are afraid, believing you would lose the world you learned since then. And yet you know that nothing in the world you learned is half so dear as this. Listen, and see if you remember an ancient song you knew so long ago and held more dear than any melody you taught yourself to cherish since.

“Beyond the body, beyond the sun and stars, past everything you see and yet somehow familiar, is an arc of golden light that stretches as you look into a great and shining circle. And all the circle fills with light before your eyes. The edges of the circle disappear, and what is in it is no longer contained at all. The light expands and covers everything, extending to infinity forever shining and with no break or limit anywhere. Within it everything is joined in perfect continuity. Nor is it possible to imagine that anything could be outside, for there is nowhere that this light is not.

“This is the vision of the Son of God, whom you know well. Here is the sight of him who knows his Father. Here is the memory of what you are; a part of this, with all of it within, and joined to all as surely as all is joined in you. Accept the vision that can show you this, and not the body. You know the ancient song, and know it well. Nothing will ever be as dear to you as is this ancient hymn the Son of God sings to his Father still.”

And now the blind can see, for that same song they sing in honour of their Creator gives praise to them as well. The blindness that they made will not withstand the memory of this song. And they will look upon the vision of the Son of God, remembering who he is they sing of. What is a miracle but this remembering? And who is there in whom this memory lies not? The light in one awakens it in all. And when you see it in your brother, you are remembering for everyone.”

***

God Is

“Oneness is simply the idea God is. And in His Being, He encompasses all things. No mind holds anything but Him. We say “God is,” and then we cease to speak, for in that knowledge words are meaningless. There are no lips to speak them, and no part of mind sufficiently distinct to feel that it is now aware of something not itself. It has united with its Source. And like its Source Itself, it merely is.

We cannot speak nor write nor even think of this at all. It comes to every mind when total recognition that its will is God’s has been completely given and received completely. It returns the mind into the endless present, where the past and future cannot be conceived. It lies beyond salvation; past all thought of time, forgiveness and the holy face of Christ. The Son of God has merely disappeared into his Father, as his Father has in him. The world has never been at all. Eternity remains a constant state.”

Love, or A Call For Love

“Where there is love, your brother must give it to you because of what it is.

But where there is a call for love, you must give it because of what you are”

(text, p.275; T-14.X.12:2-3).

Not One Note In Heaven’s Song Was Missed

God gave His Teacher to replace the one you made, not to conflict with it. And what He would replace has been replaced. Time lasted but an instant in your mind, with no effect upon eternity. And so is all time passed, and everything exactly as it was before the way to nothingness was made. The tiny tick of time in which the first mistake was made, and all of them within that one mistake, held also the Correction for that one, and all of them that came within the first. And in that tiny instant time was gone, for that was all it ever was. What God gave answer to is answered and is gone.

To you who still believe you live in time and know not it is gone, the Holy Spirit still guides you through the infinitely small and senseless maze you still perceive in time, though it has long since gone. You think you live in what is past. Each thing you look upon you saw but for an instant, long ago, before its unreality gave way to truth. Not one illusion still remains unanswered in your mind. Uncertainty was brought to certainty so long ago that it is hard indeed to hold it to your heart, as if it were before you still.

The tiny instant you would keep and make eternal, passed away in Heaven too soon for anything to notice it had come. What disappeared too quickly to affect the simple knowledge of the Son of God can hardly still be there, for you to choose to be your teacher. Only in the past — ”an ancient past, too short to make a world in answer to creation, — did this world appear to rise. So very long ago, for such a tiny interval of time, that not one note in Heaven’s song was missed. Yet in each unforgiving act or thought, in every judgment and in all belief in sin, is that one instant still called back, as if it could be made again in time. You keep an ancient memory before your eyes. And he who lives in memories alone is unaware of where he is.

Seek Ye First the Kingdom

“Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven because that is where the laws of God operate truly, and they can operate only truly since they are the laws of Truth.

But seek this only because you can find nothing else.

There is nothing else.

God is all in all in a very literal sense.

All being is in Him who is all Being.

You are therefore in Him since your being is His.”  (7.V.38, 1-4)

***

Seek Not to Change the World

“Seek not to change the world,

but choose to change your mind about the world.

What you see reflects your thinking.

And your thinking but reflects your choice of what you want to see.”

 ***

Without Your Smile…

You are indeed essential to God’s plan. Without your joy, His joy is incomplete. Without your smile, the world cannot be saved. While you are sad, the light that God Himself appointed as the means to save the world is dim and lusterless, and no one laughs because all laughter can but echo yours. (workbook lesson 100)

***

There Is A Light In You

“There is a light in you which cannot die; whose presence is so holy that the world is sanctified because of you. All things that live bring gifts to you, and offer them in gratitude and gladness at your feet. The scent of flowers is their gift to you. The waves bow down before you, and the trees extend their arms to shield you from the heat, and lay their leaves before you on the ground that you may walk in softness, while the wind sinks to a whisper round your holy head.

The light in you is what the universe longs to behold. All living things are still before you, for they recognize Who walks with you. The light you carry is their own. And thus they see in you their holiness, saluting you as savior and as God. Accept their reverence, for it is due to Holiness Itself, which walks with you, transforming in Its gentle light all things unto Its likeness and Its purity.

This is the way salvation works. As you step back, the light in you steps forward and encompasses the world. It heralds not the end of sin in punishment and death. In lightness and in laughter is sin gone, because its quaint absurdity is seen. It is a foolish thought, a silly dream, not frightening, ridiculous perhaps, but who would waste an instant in approach to God Himself for such a senseless whim?”

                   (Workbook Lesson 156)

***

Simply Do This…Hold Onto Nothing

“Simply do this: Be still, and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself. Empty your mind of everything it thinks is either true or false, or good or bad, of every thought it judges worthy, and all the ideas of which it is ashamed. Hold onto nothing. Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught, nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. Forget this world, forget this course, and come with wholly empty hands unto your God.”

(Lesson 189)

***

The Tiny Mad Idea

Into eternity, where all is one, there crept a tiny, mad idea, at which the Son of God remembered not to laugh.

In his forgetting did the thought become a serious idea, possible of both accomplishment and real effects.

[T-27.VIII.6:2-3]

***

Into Christ’s Presence

Into Christ’s Presence will we enter now, serenely unaware of everything except His shining face and perfect Love.”

(Lesson 157)

***

You Smile More Frequently

“There is a way of living in the world that is not here, although it seems to be. You do not change appearance, though you smile more frequently. Your forehead is serene; your eyes are quiet and the ones who walk the world as you do recognize their own. Yet those who have not yet perceived the way will recognize you also, and believe that you are like them, as you were before.”

***

The Voice for the Holy Spirit

“The Voice of the Holy Spirit does not command because it is incapable of arrogance. It does not demand because it does not seek control. It does not overcome because it does not attack. It merely reminds. It is compelling only because of what it reminds you of. It brings to your mind the other way, remaining quiet even in the midst of the turmoil you have made for yourselves. The Voice for God is always quiet because it speaks of peace. Yet peace is stronger than war because it heals. War is division, not increase. No one gains from strife. 25 “What profiteth it a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own Soul?” That means that if he listens to the wrong voice, he has lost sight of his Soul. He cannot lose it, but he can not know it. It is therefore lost to him until he chooses right. The Holy Spirit is your Guide in choosing. He is the part of your mind which always speaks for the right choice because He speaks for God. He is your remaining communication with God, which you can interrupt but cannot destroy. 26 The Holy Spirit is the way in which God’s Will can be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”

***

Projection Makes Perception

“Projection makes perception. The world that you see is what you have put there to see; nothing more and nothing less and so it is important to you. The world that you perceive is the witness to your state of mind, the outward picture of your inward condition. As you think so do you perceive. So do not seek to change the world but choose to change your mind about the world’s reality. What you perceive is a result, not a cause. That is why no miracle is harder than another. What you look upon with your Christ Mind’s Vision is healed and Holy and nothing perceived without It means anything. Where there is no meaning there is chaos.”

***

The Prodigal Son

“Listen to the story of the prodigal son, and learn what God’s treasure is and yours:

This son of a loving father left his home and thought he had squandered everything for nothing of any value, although he had not understood its worthlessness at the time. He was ashamed to return to his father, because he thought he had hurt him. Yet when he came home the father welcomed him with joy, because the son himself was his father’s treasure. He wanted nothing else.”

“The Course in Miniature”

“I must have decided wrongly, because I am not at peace.

I made the decision myself, but I can also decide otherwise.

I want to decide otherwise, because I want to be at peace.

I do not feel guilty, because the Holy Spirit will undo all the

consequences of my wrong decision if I will let Him.

I choose to let Him, by allowing Him to decide for God for me.”

Text, Chapter 5 [This passage is sometimes called “the Course in miniature”]

The Holy Encounter

“When you meet anyone,

remember it is a holy encounter.

As you see him you will see yourself.

As you treat him you will treat yourself.

As you think of him you will think of yourself.

Never forget this,

for in him you will find yourself or lose yourself.”

The Journey to the Cross

“Do not embark on useless journeys, because they are indeed in vain.

The ego may desire them, but spirit cannot embark on them because it is forever unwilling to depart from its Foundation.

“The journey to the cross should be the last “useless journey.”

Do not dwell upon it, but dismiss it as accomplished.

If you can accept it as your own last useless journey, you are also free to join my resurrection ….

Do not make the pathetic error of “clinging to the old rugged cross.”

The only message of the crucifixion is that you can overcome the cross.

Until then you are free to crucify yourself as often as you choose. This is not the Gospel I intended to offer you

(text, p.47; T-4.in.3:1-3, 7- 10).”

 ***

The Lord’s Prayer According to ACIM

“Forgive us our illusions, Father, and help us to accept our true relationship with You, in which there are no illusions, and where none can ever enter. Our holiness is Yours. What can there be in us that needs forgiveness when Yours is perfect? The sleep of forgetfulness is only the unwillingness to remember Your forgiveness and Your Love. Let us not wander into temptation, for the temptation of the Son of God is not Your Will. And let us receive only what You have given, and accept but this into the minds which You created and which You love.  Amen.”

  [T-16.VII.12]

***

The Shift That True Perception Brings

This is the shift that true perception brings:

What was projected out is seen within, and there forgiveness lets it disappear. For there the altar to the Son is set, and there his Father is remembered. Here are all illusions brought to truth and laid upon the altar. What is seen outside must lie beyond forgiveness, for it seems to be forever sinful. Where is hope while sin is seen as outside? What remedy can guilt expect? But seen within your mind, guilt and forgiveness for an instant lie together, side by side, upon one altar. There at last are sickness and its single remedy joined in one healing brightness. God has come to claim His Own. Forgiveness is complete.

Teach Not That I Died in Vain

“You will not find peace until you have removed the nails from the hands of God’s Son, and taken the last thorn from his forehead. The Love of God surrounds His Son whom the god of crucifixion condemns. Teach not that I died in vain. Teach rather that I did not die by demonstrating that I live in you. For the undoing of the crucifixion of God’s Son is the work of the redemption, in which everyone has a part of equal value. God does not judge His guiltless Son. Having given Himself to him, how could it be otherwise?”

                        (T-11.VI.7.)

Truly Helpful

I am here only to be truly helpful.

I am here to represent Him Who sent me.

I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do,

because He Who sent me will direct me.

I am content to be wherever He wishes,

knowing He goes there with me.

I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal.

What Am I?

“I am God’s Son, complete and healed and whole,

shining in the reflection of His Love.

In me is His creation sanctified and guaranteed eternal life.

In me is love perfected, fear impossible,

I am the holy home of God Himself.

I am the Heaven where His Love resides.

A Universal Theology is Impossible

“All terms are potentially controversial, and those who seek controversy will find it. Yet those who seek clarification will find it as well. They must, however, be willing to overlook controversy, recognizing that it is a defense against truth in the form of a delaying maneuver. Theological considerations as such are necessarily controversial, since they depend on belief and can therefore be accepted or rejected. A universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary. It is this experience toward which the course is directed. Here alone consistency becomes possible because here alone uncertainty ends…

“The ego will demand many answers that this course does not give. It does not recognize as questions the mere form of a question to which an answer is impossible. The ego may ask, “How did the impossible occur?”, “To what did the impossible happen?”, and may sak this in many forms. Yet there is no answer; only an experience. Seek only this, and do not let theology delay you.”

(Introduction to the “Clarification of Terms,” paragraphs 2, 4)

***

How Long?

“How long, O Son of God, will you maintain the game of sin? Shall we not put away these sharp-edged children’s toys? How soon will you be ready to come home? Perhaps today? There is no sin. Creation is unchanged. Would you still hold return to Heaven back? How long, O holy Son of God, how long?”

***

Choose Again

Temptation has one lesson it would teach in all its forms wherever it occurs. It would persuade the holy Son of God he is a body, born in what must die, unable to escape its frailty and bound by what it orders him to feel. It sets the limits on what he can do; its power is the only strength he has; his grasp cannot exceed its tiny reach. Would you be this if Christ appeared to you in all His glory, asking you but this:

Choose once again if you would take your place among the saviors of the world, or would remain in hell and hold your brothers there.

For He has come, and He is asking this.”

***

“Trials are but lessons you failed to learn presented once again, so where you made a faulty choice before you now can make a better one.  In every difficulty Christ calls to you and gently says,

“My brother, choose again.”

***

Final Thoughts

“O my brothers, if you only knew the peace that will envelop you and hold you safe and pure and lovely in the Mind of God, you could but rush to meet Him where His altar is. Hallowed your Name and His, for they are joined here in this holy place. Here He leans down to lift you up to Him, out of illusions into holiness; out of the world and to eternity; out of all fear and given back to love.”

(C-4.8)

There is no death because the Son of God is like his Father. Nothing you can do can change Eternal Love. Forget your dreams of sin and guilt, and come with me instead to share the resurrection of God’s Son. And bring with you all those whom He has sent to you to care for as I care for you.

A Course in Miracles & Yoga: An Introductory Comparison

22 Core Teachings of A Course in Miracles

This is not the Course, not even close.  The Course presents a whole system of practical metaphysics that requires repeated application to truly be effective and undo the ego.

These quotes really must be read in context to get the bigger picture of what’s being said and meant.

Yet they will still be helpful as a reminder for some and perhaps as an inspiration for others to actually begin to take a deeper look at the Course.

Personally, I would not have taken A Course in Miracles that seriously if I hadn’t first read Gary Renard’s “Disappearance of the Universe,” which really helps to clarify and simplify it’s message.

I still don’t know how I feel about how Gary’s book came about, yet as of now I have decided that it doesn’t matter, it’s the message that counts, and more important even, the practical application of the message.

So how is all of this connected to Yoga?  Well, Yoga means “Union,” and the highest philosophy of India, Advaita Vedanta, is the philosophy of Nonduality, which is exactly what the Course teaches, though with the added teaching of “true forgiveness” as given by Christ.

My teachers all held Jesus to be a great avatar (ascended master come to earth), perhaps the greatest ever.

I can see this now.

In any case, great minds think alike, and after all, as the Course says, there is only one mind anyway.

So let’s not get caught up in superficial differences of “oh, that’s Christian” and “that’s Hindu,” because it’s really all one.

The Real & The Unreal

1)  “Nothing real can be threatened.

   Nothing unreal exists.

Herein lies the peace of God.”

(Main message of the Course, from the Introduction)

[Compare with Shankarcharya’s classic statement of Advaita Vedanta:

 brahma satyam jagan mithya

jivo brahmaiva napara

Brahman [God] is the Reality, the universe is an illusion,

The living being is Brahman [God] alone, none else.

REMOVING THE BARRIERS TO LOVE

2) *“The search for love is but the honest searching out of everything that interferes with love.” *

“The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught.

It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance.” (ACIM, from the Introduction)

[Compare with Rumi: “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”]

Commentary: This is all the process of yoga is — Peeling the onion, going back to union, to the One Love that we are… what we call “God.”  The Course calls this “Undoing the Ego.” http://www.undoing-the-ego.org/index-ute.html

THE WORLD IS AN ILLUSION

3) * “There is no world!  This is the central thought the course attempts to teach.

Not everyone is ready to accept it, and each one must go as far as he can

let himself be led along the road to truth…” *

“The world you see is an illusion of a world.  God did not create it, for what He creates must be eternal as Himself.  Yet there is nothing in the world you see that will endure forever.” ~ ACIM

“No one can escape from illusions unless he looks at them, for not looking is the way they are protected.”  ~ ACIM

“There is nothing outside you.”  ~ ACIM

[Einstein: A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest… a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”]

TRAINING THE MIND

4) “This is a course in mind training.

An untrained mind can accomplish nothing.” *

DU: “One of the goals of the Course is to train your mind so the time will come when instead of judging automatically, you will forgive automatically.”

DU ~ “This is a lifelong spiritual path with numerous rewards along the way — but they happen within a difficult process.”

DU ~ “One of the reasons that A Course in Miracles is so long is that, even though the truth may be simple and consistent, your ego is not — and it needs to be undone gradually.”

“And now he must attain a state that may remain impossible to reach for a long , long time.

– He must learn to lay all judgment aside, and ask only what he really wants in every circumstance.” ~ ACIM

[Commentary: The Yoga Sutras recommends constant practice and “non attachment.”   It also says that we can get there faster with more intense practice.  The paradox is that time is an illusion and that whenever we get there, in whatever dream lifetime, is at a time beyond time anyway!

ACTION IN THE WORLD

5) “This is a course in cause and not effect.

Therefore, seek not to change the world,

but choose to change your mind about the world.” *

“The ego made the world as it perceives it, but the Holy Spirit, the reinterpreter of what the ego made,

sees the world as a teaching device for bringing you home.”  ~ ACIM

FEAR & LOVE

(or, Fear OR Love)

6) * “Fear and love are the only emotions of which you are capable.” *

“Fear binds the world.  Forgiveness sets it free.”  ~ ACIM

“The presence of fear is a sure sign that you are trusting in your own strength.”  ~ ACIM

“Perfect love casts out fear. If fear exists, then there is not perfect love.”  ~  ACIM

“It is but your thoughts that bring you fear.”  ~ ACIM

“There is nothing to fear.”  ~ ACIM

Jesus ~ You cannot serve two masters.

DU: “The words love and fear in the Course represent two complete and mutually exclusive thought systems.”

Ram Dass: “Live from your soul, not your ego.”

GUILT & SUFFERING

8) * “The guiltless mind cannot suffer.”  *

Commentary: According to DU, Jesus was crucified, but did not suffer.  He realized that he was guiltless and so were his apparent persecutors.  He also realized he was not his body.

A similar process happens in yoga.  At first the practice of yoga can be very challenging, even torturous.  Over time, it becomes easier and easier as

blockages are released from the body-mind.  For me personally, yoga and exercise in general have become nearly effortless and fun – until I go to the next layer/level where I begin to access the unconscious.

DU ~ “Pain is not a physical process, it is a mental process.”

[Compare: Buddha’s 4 Noble Truths:

The four noble truths are:[a]

  1. The truth of dukkha (suffering, anxiety, dissatisfaction)
  2. The truth of the origin of dukkha
  3. The truth of the cessation of dukkha
  4. The truth of the path leading to the cessation of dukkha]

9) * “A sense of separation from God is the only lack you really need correct.” *

“The truth about you is so lofty that nothing unworthy of God is worthy of you.

Choose, then, what you want in these terms, and accept nothing that you would not offer to God as wholly fitting for Him.”  ~ ACIM

      FORGIVENESS

10) * “Forgiveness is the healing of the perception of separation.” *

Commentary: Ultimately, forgiveness is an illusion, because we’re forgiving something that’s not there…It’s purpose is to lead you to God, but it’s not of God.

Unlike all other illusions, it leads you away from separation and not towards it.  The Course calls it a “happy fiction.”

“This is not a course in philosophical speculation, nor is it concerned with precise terminology.

It is concerned only with Atonement, or the correction of perception.

The means of the Atonement is forgiveness.”  ~ ACIM

“He who would not forgive must judge, for he must justify his failure to forgive.”  ~ ACIM

“There is a simple way to find the door to true forgiveness, and perceive it open wide in welcome.

When you feel you are tempted to accuse someone of sin in any form, do not allow your mind to dwell on what you think he did,

for that is self-deception.  Ask instead, “Would I accuse myself of doing this?”  ~ ACIM

“Forgiveness allows love to return to my awareness.”  ~ ACIM

“God does not forgive for he has never condemned.”  ~ ACIM

DU ~ “Forgiveness and arguing are mutually exclusive, and forgiveness is always the way.”

DU ~ “You have to learn how to turn the tables on the ego. The only way to forgive what is within is to forgive what seems to be without.”

DU ~ “True forgiveness is the real purpose of life, but you’ve got to choose it in order to make it yours.”

Jesus: “Judge not lest ye be judged.”

“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

“That which is hateful to you do not do to your fellow man.” etc.

NON-JUDGMENT

11) * “The ego cannot survive without judgment.” *

“You have no idea of the tremendous release and deep peace that comes  from meeting yourself and your brother totally without judgement.”  ~ ACIM

“Judgment and love are opposites.  From the one comes all the sorrows of the world.  From the other comes the peace of God.

Judgment will bind my eyes and make me blind.” ~ ACIM

The Golden Rule: “Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” ~ Jesus

‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'” ~ Jesus

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?” ~ Jesus

“Fire the Judge and hire the Witness.” ~ Gurudev

PEACE OF MIND

12) * “There are no small upsets.” *

They are all equally disturbing to my peace of mind.”

DU ~ “It is just as important to forgive a cold as a physical assault,

and just as important to forgive a subtle insult as the death of a loved one.”

Commentary: Having a bad hair day is just as needing of forgiveness as having a bad hair life!  Or if you’re bald, a bald hair day!  Forgive it all!

13) * “To teach is to demonstrate.” *

“As you teach, so shall you learn.”  ~ ACIM

“I am among the ministers of God.” ~ ACIM

“The ego does not want to teach everyone all it has learned, because that would defeat its purpose.” ~ ACIM

15) * “Sickness is of the mind and has nothing to do with the body.” *

“Sickness is but another name for sin.

Healing is but another name for God.

The miracle is thus a call to Him.” ~ ACIM

“The acceptance of sickness as a decision of the mind, for a purpose for which it would use the body, is the basis of healing.

And this is so for healing in all forms.” ~ ACIM

DU ~ First Biggest Rule About Spiritual Healing: “It’s not about the patient.  All healing is a result of some kind of forgiveness, and all forgiveness leads to self-healing.”

Second Biggest Rule: “Pain is not a physical process.  It is a mental process.”

REAL ABUNDANCE

16) * “You have sought first the Kingdom of Heaven, and all else has indeed been given you.” *

DU ~ “How much success or money you get has nothing whatsoever to do with how spiritually enlightened you are.”

DU ~ “If you remember you’re not a body, then you can step back and see that what you desire is valueless.”

“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?”

~ Jesus

[Commentary: If abundance comes, let it be a “perk of the job” so to speak, and then use it to further the work you are doing.  The Course essentially is telling us to make the world and the things of the world nothing, because they are.  If we are fervently seeking them and praying for them, then we are missing the point.]

TRUE PRAYER

17) * “The secret of true prayer is to forget the things you think you need.” *

“I once asked you to sell all you have and give to the poor and follow me.  This is what I meant: If you have no investment

in anything in this world, you can teach the poor where their treasure is.  The poor are merely this who have invested wrongly, and they are poor indeed!” ~ ACIM

“Not my will, but Thy will.”  à Not the ego’s script, but the Holy Spirit’s.

Commentary: In yoga, meditation is generally considered a more beneficial practice than prayer.  There is a saying, “When you pray, you talk to God.  When you meditate, God talks to you.   Generally we only really pray unless we’re in a crisis, or if we really need something.   This type of prayer is coming from a place of fear, not love.

SEX

18) * “This course does not attempt to take from you the little that you have.” *

“The special relationships of the world are destructive, selfish, and childishly egocentric. Yet, if given to the Holy Spirit, these relationships can become the holiest things on earth—the miracles that point the way to the return to Heaven.

The world uses its special relationships as a final weapon of exclusion and a demonstration of separateness.

The Holy Spirit transforms them into perfect lessons in forgiveness and in awakening from the dream.

Each one is an opportunity to let perceptions be healed and errors corrected. Each one is another chance to forgive oneself by forgiving the other.   And each one becomes still another invitation to the Holy Spirit and to the remembrance of God.”  ~ ACIM

DU ~ “A dream is nothing, and sex is nothing.

But I wouldn’t recommend that you turn to your partner after making love and say, “That was nothing.”

DU ~ “Tension can be released by forgiveness, but until someone is very proficient at it they shouldn’t be forced to give up earthly desires.”

“Let not their form deceive you.  Idols are but substitutes for your reality.” ~ ACIM

DU ~ “We’ve made a false idol out of the sexual feeling, like a substitute for God.”

First Commandment (Book of Exodus): “I am the Lord thy God…Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods [Idols] Before Me.”

What other false idols do we have?

Death

LIFE & DEATH

19) “Death is the central dream from which all illusions stem.” *

“If death is real for anything, there is no life.  Death denies life, but if there is reality in life, death is denied.

No compromise in this is possible.”  ~ ACIM

“Death is the symbol of the fear of God.” ~ ACIM

“God did not make death because He did not make fear.  Both are equally meaningless to Him.”  ~ ACIM

“Are you afraid to find a loss of self in finding God?”  ~ ACIM

“The reality of death is firmly rooted in the belief that God’s Son [you] is a body.” ~ ACIM

“Without the idea of death, there is no world.  All dreams will end with this one.”  ~ ACIM

Enlightenment

ENLIGHTENMENT

20) * “Enlightenment is but a recognition, not a change at all.” *

[Commentary: Other names in the Course for Enlightenment are “Resurrection,” “Salvation,” “Atonement,” “Awakening.”]

“Your resurrection is your reawakening.”

DU ~ Enlightenment is “the total absence of unconscious guilt.”

DU ~ “Enlightenment happens during one of your illusory lifetimes.  The body is laid aside once and for all only after your mind awakens from the dream.”

DU ~ “When you’re enlightened, you will completely awaken from the dream.  Even though you’ll still appear to be in a body, you’ll see what the Course refers to as the real world. …You’ll see only innocence everywhere, because it’s your own innocence — the innocence of Christ.”

“Before enlightenment – chop wood, carry water.  After enlightenment – chop wood, carry water.” ~ Zen Saying

Commentary:  The “Son of God” which the Course so often mentions is none other than…You!  You are the One you’ve been waiting for!

You are Christ!  (Or if you prefer, Mary!)  And so is everyOne else, too!

THE COURSE IN MINIATURE

21) “I must have decided wrongly, because I am not at peace.

I made the decision myself, but I can also decide otherwise.

I want to decide otherwise, because I want to be at peace.

I do not feel guilty, because the Holy Spirit

will undo all the consequences of my wrong decision if I will let Him.

I choose to let Him, by allowing Him to decide for God for me.”

  • Text, Chapter 5
  • This passage is sometimes called “the Course in miniature”

22)   * “GOD IS” *

“Life has no opposite, for it is God. ”

“Life and death seem to be opposites because you have decided death ends life.   Forgive the world, and you will understand that everything that God create cannot have an end, and nothing He did not create is real.

In this one sentence is our Course explained.

In this one sentence is our practicing given its one direction.

And in this one sentence is the Holy Spirit’s whole curriculum specified exactly as it is.” ~ ACIM

“We say ‘God is,’ and then we cease to speak, for in that knowledge words are meaningless.

There are no lips to speak them, and no part of mind sufficiently distinct to feel that it is now aware of something

not itself.  It has united with its Source.  And like its Source Itself, it merely is.”  ~ ACIM

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” ~ Jesus

Commentary: Funny how we need these big books to tell us “God Is” and all else, including all of the words, are ultimately meaningless.  It’s a work is process, the lifetime plan…

22+ = 23) Come on, there had to be one more, the most important one!

LAUGHTER!

* “Into eternity, where all is one, there crept a tiny, mad idea,

at which the Son of God remembered not to laugh.

In his forgetting did the thought become a serious idea,

possible of both accomplishment and real effects.” *

[ACIM, T-27.VIII.6:2-3]

Trivia Question: Where does Jesus laugh in the Gospels?

I don’t seem to recall Jesus ever laughing or smiling – let alone singing or dancing.  Gotta watch the movie “Godspell” for that! J

But we do have Jesus crying as in the shortest verse in the Gospels: “Jesus Wept,” which is just a little shorter perhaps than the saying of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas (a non-canonical, Gnostic Gospel), “Be Passerby.”

“Laugh at the ego and be free!”
